Nalini Ravichandran, 24 Oct 2010
"CHENNAI: Alzheimer’s was always associated with the aged, but the recent cases of Alzheimers’ also include the unsuspecting persons in the age group of as early as in their late 40s and early 50s."
"Alzheimer’s, one of the reasons for dementia, is assuming alarming proportions even as there is no clinical cure. There are currently, 50,000 dementia diagnosed patients in Chennai with most progressing into Alzheimer’s as 9 per cent of the population is said to be affected by the disease. In India alone there would be about 4.48 million, which is expected to grow four times. It is only during random screenings that people find out about it,” he said. People go for checking their BP, cholesterol and other aspects, but not their cognitive areas, he noted. Memory loss is dismissed as stress and part of ageing, Dr Lakshmi Narasimhan noted."
